Despite a break between games of the NBA Finals, there was a lot of national (and international) sporting news that took place yesterday on June 4th as there was plenty of action between the Stanley Cup Final, the French Open and the MLB Draft.

Capitals One Win Away From Stanley Cup Title

The big news from last night comes out of our nation’s capital as the Washington Capitals took a commanding 3-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals with a 6-2 trouncing of the Vegas Golden Knights.

It was a blowout from the start as T.J. Oshie, Tom Wilson and Devante Smith-Pelly all scored goals for the Capitals in the first period to give Washington a staggering 3-0 lead going into the first intermission.

The Caps continued their domination as a goal by John Carlson increased Washington’s lead t0 4-0 after two periods.

Vegas would try to mount a desperate comeback in the third period with a pair of goals from James Neal and Reilly Smith to cut Washington’s lead to 4-2 but the Capitals finished off the Golden Knights with a pair of goals from Michal Kempny and Brett Connolly to claim a 6-2 victory in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Serena Williams Pulls Out Of French Open

Women’s tennis legend Serena Williams announced Monday morning that she would be pulling out of her match with Maria Sharapova in the French Open due to a right pectoral muscle injury.

“Right now, I can’t actually serve,” said Williams on her injury.  “It’s kind of hard to play when I can’t physically serve.”

Williams, 36, has been making a comeback to tennis lately after giving birth to her daughter, Olympia, back in September.

“I’m beyond disappointed,” said Williams.  “I gave up so much, from time with my daughter to time with my family.  I put everything on the court all for this moment.  So, it’s really difficult to be in this situation, but I always, for now in my life, I just always try to think positive and just think of the bigger picture and hopefully the next events and the rest of the year.”

The 23-time Grand Slam winner was set to face off against longtime foe Maria Sharapova in Round 4 of the French Open.  Williams is 19-3 vs. Sharapova in her career.

Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray Selected Top Ten Of MLB Draft

The Oklahoma Sooners football team could be searching for a new starting quarterback soon for the 2018 season as their expected starting quarterback, junior Kyler Murray, was drafted 9th overall by the Oakland Athletics in the first round of the 2018 MLB Draft.

Murray currently is an outfielder on the Oklahoma baseball team and a quarterback for the Oklahoma football team.

With reigning Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield now playing for the Cleveland Browns as the top overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Kyler Murray is expected to take his place as starting QB for the Sooners, who are coming off of a 2017 season where they made the College Football Playoff.

According to Susan Slusser, Athletics beat writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, Kyler Murray has said he will “definitely” play football in the fall for Oklahoma and that Oakland is okay with it.

It sounds like Kyler Murray could have his cake and eat it too but there is no official report yet from the University of Oklahoma, the Oakland Athletics or Murray himself so it could still be up in the air as to what he will decide to do.

The 2014 Gatorade Football Player Of The Year will have to choose between leading the Sooners, who have a chance to win a national title this coming season or going straight to professional baseball where the value for the 9th overall pick is estimated to be $4,761,500.
