Chris Holtmann started off his tenure as head coach of Ohio State men’s basketball with a W on Friday night as the Buckeyes dominated Robert Morris, 95-64, in their season opener.
Despite a slow start in the first few minutes, Ohio State found themselves up by 20 at the half and that was pretty much all she wrote.
Keita Bates-Diop looked tremendous in his return to the court as the junior went down early last season with an injury and hasn’t played in a regular season game in almost a full year. KBD recorded a double-double in his season debut with 19 points and 11 boards as well as two blocks.
Returning starter Kam Williams also had a tremendous season opener as he posted 16 points on 50% shooting.
Freshman Musa Jallow was impressive off the bench as he added 11 points the the Buckeyes’ total score on 5-8 shooting.
The Wesson brothers shined tonight as well as Andre went off for nine points and four rebounds and his younger brother Kaleb had a stellar 13 points and seven rebounds in his Buckeye debut.
ESPN’s Dan Dakich was in attendance at tonight’s game to watch his son, Andrew, make his Ohio State debut. The transfer had five assists and three rebounds in his first game with the Buckeyes but didn’t attempt a single shot in 17 minutes on the court.
Senior forward Jae’Sean Tate was a well-rounded player tonight with seven points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block. Tate, however, struggled with ball control as he turned the ball over six times in the season opener.
To be fair, Ohio State struggled all-around as a team with ball security as the Buckeyes had a combined 19 turnovers, which head coach Chris Holtmann addressed in his postgame press conference.
